Judiciary Receives Vehicle, Computers to Aid Access to Justice in Refugee Host Communities

The Governance and Security Programme (GSP) Secretariat handed over to the Judiciary, and other justice institutions, equipment to ensure increased access to justice, improved security and protection of refugees and host communities in Northern Uganda.

The equipment which included a motor vehicle are part of the European Union (EU) Supreme Project.

The Head of Governance and Social Inclusion at the European Union, Mr Nicolas Gonze said that the EU provided 4.7million Euros to Uganda to increase presence and reach of JLOS frontline actors in refugee settlements and host communities, to enhance capacity of frontline actors and to respond to justice needs of refugees and host communities. 

He noted the need to increase knowledge of rights and obligations of refugees, host communities, and strengthening coordination of JLOS actors and duty bearers for improved access to justice and protection of refugees and host communities.

Mr Gonze said the hope is that the equipment will enable Government to reach the mandate of the project.

He called upon the development partners to collectively review progress, identify challenges to ensure proper implementation of the project.

The Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Mr Robert Kasande, extended special gratitude to the European Union for their support in the implementation of the project, "Access to justice for refugees is at the heart of our vision to ensure access to justice for all and to leave no one behind, especially the poor and vulnerable in our communities," he said. 

The Judiciary Under Secretary, Finance and Administration, Ms Maureen Kasande, received one pick up vehicle and seven computers and seven printers on behalf of the Judiciary. 

Other beneficiaries of the project include Office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions, Ministry of Internal Affairs, especially Community Service, Uganda Police Force, Uganda Human Rights Commission, Justice Centres Uganda, and Uganda Prisons Service.
